Seven of us spent the day in NE Ohio yesterday, w/stops at the CVNP,
Headlands, Dike 14, and the Lorain impoundment. Nancy Anderson's report
reflects pretty well the species mixes we found. At the CVNP we had one
and probably two Nelson's sparrows, and at the Lorain impoundment
(around the first pond you reach outside the circular path if you
proceed clockwise from the parking area) we had two more.
Headlands was scoured of interesting gulls, and the woods had modest
numbers of migrants, and to Nancy's list I'd add juncos as frequently
seen. Dike 14 was pretty birdy, but the species list was rather short,
with kinglets, Zonotrichia sparrows, and yellow-rumps ubiquitous. Lorain
was strange, with acres and acres of superficially attractive-looking
mudflats and scattered shallow water, but by way of shorebirds only a
half dozen killdeers! A few wild-acting mallards and teals had arrived,
and there were throngs of sparrows and yellow-rumps.
This mix of birds may continue this week, but if something rambunctious
in the way of storms from the north comes, the change should be fairly
radical. We stopped briefly at the Wellington Res on the way back to
Columbus, and felt the times to come as we stood in a newly chilly wind
and watched hundreds of ruddy ducks and as many coots, Canada geese, and
gulls threading their way among the fishermen's boats. Their turn's coming.
