At 9:50 a.m. on this bright October morning, diverse players took the field behind Ohio University Zanesville-Zane State College.
On
the fence surrounding Tom Checkush Field, a yellow-rumped warbler and a
bluebird perched side by side. When the bluebird took off, the warbler
followed its flightpath closely, and they both flew together to the
same branch in a nearby pine tree--not an everyday sight.
Then I noticed three bluebirds sitting atop the backstop; two killdeer skittered along in the dirt between first and second base; a flicker poked around in center field.
Not enough players to make a good showing in the World Series of Birding--but it was a beautiful game nonetheless.
