jerry talkington and emil bacik combined for more than 800 migrating common loons this morning (11/17/2008) at headlands beach state park. the majority of the movement was east to west, and oftentimes high overhead, but started out very early north to south. two red-throated loons were detected in this movement. today's rare gulls were at least three adult little gulls, one with the inshore bonaparte's gull flock and two with the massive bonaparte's gull flock at the mouth of the river. also, an ADULT black-headed gull was with the flock at the mouth of the river. this latter bird could best be observed only after a rather treacherous walk out to the lighthouse. the immature black-headed gull found by jen brumfield on 11/16/2008 was not seen today. other notable sightings today at headlands were one (1) short-eared owl very early and a flock of 500 snow buntings migrating inside the breakwall.
