I spent parts of these two mornings visiting this complex of streams and fields south of Columbus looking for late migrants. On the 31st, I focused on the northern migrant traps in the park - Heron Pond and Oxbow -, while today I worked the southern accumulation areas - the Confluence area and the Groveport Blacklick Bikepath (GBBP). The decent weather allowed for a good flight of late migrants, with the highlights being:

Great Egret - 1 was still lingering at the pond at Cruiser Park next to the Groveport BBP, but this is all that's left of 15-20 that were hanging around several of the ponds in 3-Creeks back in mid-October

Cormorant - singles were at Cruiser Pond and Heron Pond, reflecting their movement through inland areas

Woodpeckers - still large numbers of residents, but also a healthy dose of migrant flickers, as well as sapsuckers at both the Confluence and GBBP.

Larks, Pipits - lots of flyover individuals of both of these open-country migrants. 2 pipits were over Heron Pond on the 31st, while 12 flew over the Confluence this morning. 1-2 larks were over each of the spots visited.

Wrens,Kinglets - the only Winter Wren was at Confluence, while Kinglets of both species were at all sites, but in low numbers

Thrushes,Mimids,Waxwings - good numbers of Robins at every stop, topped by 60-70 accumulated in honeysuckles near the Confluence picnic area. The only Hermit thrush was at Confluence, while pairs of Mockingbirds were at Oxbow and at GBBP. Cedar waxwings were common this morning, especially at GBBP.

Warblers - Yellow-rumps, not surprisingly, were seen everywhere. GBBP also had single Palm Warbler and Black-thr.Green

Sparrows - White-throated Sparrows were one of the most common birds seen, with double-digit #s at every stop. The Confluence area had a small flock of 6 Chippings as well as 1 Fox sparrow, while GBBP had a few Swamp sparrows. Juncos moved in between the two mornings, with few on the 31st, but over 50 this morning.

Blackbirds - lost of overflights of small flocks of Redwings, especially this morning at Confluence, where 270+ went over in 1 hour. Grackles and Cowbirds were much less noticeable. 2 E.Meadowlarks were in the open fields of Smith farm north of Heron Pond.

Finches - a single Purple Finch was a flyover at Heron Pond, while Pine Siskins were seen there and at Confluence and GBBP.
