Hikes the last two mornings around southern Hoover Reservoir and Blendon Woods produced single Purple Finches at several locations. This, along with Jim McCormac's observations at Kildeer Plains, indicates a movement of these finches into central Ohio. The birds I had were at the Blendon Woods Nature Center, Walnut Ravine, and Duncan Glen, the latter two being large forested ravines along the east shore of Hoover Reservoir. Just as with Crossbills, the best way to 'find' these birds is to acquaint yourself with the calls and the song. If it's a sunny day (like today), they will sing, even in winter; that's how I found the Blendon Woods bird. They're also not averse to coming in to well-stocked feeders, so you might find them at backyard feeders or at some of the Nature Centers in the area.
