I took off a couple hours this morning in anticipation of a good movement of
birds, and I wasn't disappointed. The morning started off with brisk winds
and light flurries. By 9:00 the snow increased enough that it made viewing
occasionally difficult then would clear up. At around 9:30 the snow got
heavier and visibility dropped to zero so I quit. There were numbers and
diversity of waterfowl and gulls. Seven species of gulls were seen with
Franklin's, lesser black-backed gulls, and kittiwake making things
interesting. A parasitic jaeger was also found. It passed by about 8:50.
It was heading west and passed directly below the tundra swan flock that was
heading east. A surf scoter was the only unusual duck. Another bird of
interest for me was pied-billed grebe. It is a species that I do not often
see on the open lake here.
