A quick run through the major access points on this reservoir north of Columbus showed the last dregs of landbird migrants and the first push of waterfowl. I visited New Galena boat launch, the Visitor's Center and beach, Lewis Center Road access, Berlin Station access, and SummerRidge access. Most of the waterfowl were in small flocks at the southern end of the lake. Highlights included

Waterfowl - flocks included 8 Gadwall, 1 Green-winged Teal, 16 Bufflehead, 40 Ruddy, 4 Red-br.Mergansers, and 2 Hooded Mergansers, among the usual mess of mallards.

Other divers - 1 Cormorant was off the beach, while a flock of 20 Coots huddled nearby. A single Common Loon was off Lewis Center Rd access. Several small groups of Horned Grebes were noted, as were 3 different Pied-billed Grebes

Gulls - numbers of both Ring-bills and Bonapartes declined from prior weeks, highlighting their passage

Pipits,Larks - 3 American Pipits at New Galena were notable, while flyover Horned Larks were at many stops. With lots of exposed mud here, there are probably many more than I heard.

Thrushes,Waxwings - Robins were also conspicuously scarce, but E.Bluebirds had flocks at 2 spots: 3 flyovers at New Galena and 7 in berry bushes near the Visitor's Center. Flyover Cedar waxwings were at several spots, with 15 at New Galena the highest.

Sparrows - no Tree Sparrows yet (this is often an early spot for them), but a small flock of Field Sparrows were still foraging in the scrublands southeast of the Visitor's Center. Single Fox Sparrows were at both New Galena and the west end of the dam. A flyover Lapland Longspur at New Galena was actually very typical for this time of year.
