I must admit my son spotted the male and female long-tail duck at Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula. The ducks were viewable from the boat ramp parking lot just west of the pavilion. Having our Sibley and Peterson field guides made confirming our initial conclusion easier. The ducks have a white rump patch and white across the eye. The ducks are slightly smaller than a Ring-billed Gull with a definite wing flip when diving. Three male and female Buffleheads were also present.

It was nice to be back home this week. The only thing better in Ashtabula County then the shoreline are the wonderful people who live in this region.

Rick and Richard Oxley.
