Today was beautiful with the warm southerly winds. Ice moved around again so
that most of the south channel and the eastern side of South Bass Island was
open water again. Tundra Swans were dispersed along the east side with the
following numbers in an area of open water at Chapman's Point (east side
behind Perry's Monument.)
5 Tundra Swans
xx Mallard
x Black Duck
xxx Common Goldeneye
xx Herring Gull
xx Ring-billed Gull
x Greater Black-backed Gull
Everywhere today were golden-crowned kinglets. Several stops along the road
at East Point produced yellow-rumped warblers, brown creepers, and Carolina
wrens as well. An immature bald eagle flew overhead twice today.
Probably the biggest surprise of the day came right at dark. I had noticed a
number of insects active today (mostly midges) and saw two bats flying
around my yard at sunset!
