Andi,

I suspected a possible road kill when I saw the photos too. I have seen
Cooper's Hawks attack and kill Red Squirrels, which of course are smaller
than the Fox Squirrel in the photo, but I've also seen larger female
Cooper's attack live Fox Squirrels, but have never seen an actual kill. A
squirrel as big as this one might be quite a chore for a smaller male
Cooper's to subdue. I've also seen Fox Squirrels "teasing" juvenile Cooper's
Hawks by creeping up on them when perched and nipping at their tails.
Playing with fire??? Another female Cooper's was observed grabbing a Fox
Squirrel that had climbed the ~50-feet up a tree to its nest. She then flew
out a short distance with the squirrel in her talons and dropped it to the
ground!

Every day, the hummingbird eats its own weight in food.
You may wonder how it weighs the food.
It doesn't. It just eats another hummingbird.
