Compiler: John Habig. Email: [log in to unmask]

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these
sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful
observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for
submitting your data. For details and pointers see:

Snow Goose: Frank Frick reported finding six mixed in with Canada Geese
at the Fernald Nature Preserve on the 13th. Mike Sandy and his son saw
six at Lorain Metroparks also on the 13th.

Ross's Goose: Brad Sparks reported that there was one at Upper Sandusky
Reservoir on the 13th.

Cackling Goose: On the 12th Rick Asamoto and Shane Egleston found two at
Old Reid Park near Buck Creek SP. Mike McKay found four on the Great
Miami River in Dayton near the Stewart St Bridge on the 15th.

Surf Scoter: Nancy Anderson located three at Sims Park on the 12th. John
Pogacnik reported two on his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 13th.

White-winged Scoter: On the afternoon of the 12th Nancy Anderson found
two while birding at Sims Park.

Black Scoter: Two were found at Sims Park by Nancy Anderson on the 12th.
Craig Holt went to Conneaut Harbor on the 13th and found two.

Long-tailed Duck: Craig Caldwell and the McCartys discovered one at E.
72nd St on the 13th just east of the warm water outlet and moving
further east. Al La Sala reported one on the 13th at the Hoover
Reservoir spillway. Craig Holt found one at Conneaut Harbor on the 13th
and three at Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula. On the 16th one was found at
Sims Park. Cheryl Harner and Judy Kolo-Rose reported either a female or
immature bird at the Huron City Pier.

Red-necked Grebe: Everitt Kitchen reported one on the south pond at Camp
Dennison on the 14th. The bird apparently left soon after as Bob Foppe
was not able to relocate the bird on the 16th.

Franklin's Gull: During his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 13th John
Pogacnik saw one immature bird. Also on the 13th Craig Caldwell and the
McCartys found one at E. 72nd St just west of the outlet from the power
plant.

Little Gull: Kim Kaufman found one adult at the Bayshore Power Plant
during the Toledo CBC on the 14th. John Pogacnik reported three adults
and one immature on the 13th. Gabe Leidy reported one at Lorain on the
13th.

BLACK-HEADED GULL: On the 13th John Pogacnik reported one during his
Lakeshore Waterbird Survey.

CALIFORNIA GULL: A single first-winter bird was found by Jen Brumfield
at E. 72nd St on the 12th.

Thayer's Gull: On the 12th Jen Brumfield found one at E.72nd St. Dan
Sanders found a first-year bird at E. 72nd St on the 16th.

Iceland Gull: Jen Brumfield reported one at E. 72nd St on the 12th.
Possibly the same bird was seen on the 15th by Dan Sanders.

Glaucous Gull: Jen Brumfield reported at least three at E. 72nd St on
the 12th. Dan Sanders saw one first year bird at the same location on
the 15th.

Common Tern: Five were reported near the Bayshore Power Plant during the
Toledo CBC on the 14th.

Pomarine Jaeger: Matt Vosniak captured a fantastic photo of the jaeger
at Avon Lake on the 13th. This is probably the same bird that was seen
last week at this site affording many observers great looks. The bird
was seen again on the 14th by Tim Colburn and on the 15th by Dan
Sanders. The bird was still being seen through the 18th.

PARASITIC JAEGER: John Pogacnik reported that one was seen during the
Lake Erie Islands CBC on the 14th.

Snowy Owl: Jen Brumfield reported that the immature owl was seen on the
12th at Burke Airport. Airport officials were attempting to scare the
bird away with a flare gun. Jen reported that the owl flew over the
phragmites and out of sight. The effort by the officials apparently
failed as Dan Sanders refound the bird at the airport on the 15th.

Long-eared Owl: Four were found at Maumee Bay SP on the 14th.

Northern Saw-whet Owl: Two calling birds were heard on the 14th at
Maumee Bay SP.

SAY'S PHOEBE: The Bobolink Rare Bird Hotline reported a one day wonder
that showed up in Holmes County near the intersection of SR 226 and SR 3
on the 14th.

Northern Shrike: Lisa Rainsong reported one at Swine Creek Reservation
in Geauga County on the 12th. Rich McCarty found one near West Union
during the Adams County CBC on the 15th. Two hours later Mark Zloba
found an immature bird in his section of the CBC circle.

Warbling Vireo: The Bobolink Rare Bird Hotline reported on the 18thy
that the vireo first reported on November 19th was still being seen.
This bird is believed to be of the western race.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher: Accidental in December John Pogacnik reported
that one was found on the 14th during the Lake Erie Islands CBC.

Black-throated Blue Warbler: The male originally reported in Mahoning
County on the 6th remained at least through the 13th. This could
represent a confirmed late record for Ohio.

Bobolink: Brian Zwiebel located one during the Toledo CBC on the 14th
near an impoundment at the Bayshore Power Plant. The bird was seen by
several other observers. This bird should have been in Argentina two
months ago.

Lincoln's Sparrow: Accidental in December one was found at the Bayshore
Power Plant on the 14th.

Dickcissel: One was seen at the feeders at Blendon Woods on the 14th
during the Columbus CBC. Gene Stauffer took photos that confirm the ID.

White-winged Crossbill: White-winged Crossbills were still widely
reported though in much smaller numbers. Last week Secrest Cemetery had
28 - 30. That number was down to two on the 12th. Greg Links saw two
males in the Lambertville/Temperance area on the 13th. Brad Sparks found
a male at Oak Hill Cemetery in Wyandot County on the 13th. Jim Miller
reported that 15 were seen at the Wooster OARDC on the 13th. Patrick Coy
reported five at CVNP near the intersection of Riding Run Trail and
Everett Road on the 13th while Dwight Chasar found seven to ten along
the Boston Run Trail.
