A leg-banded, adult Red-shouldered hawk has been present the last two days
in backyards and a two-acre woodlot on Marshall Road in Centerville. The
bird first showed up Christmas morning to eat some ground chuck my mother
threw out for the crows. It ate on the ground for a while before taking a
tennis ball-sized piece of chuck up into a maple in the wood lot behind the
house and methodically gobbling it down. Blue Jays, Cardinals, American
Crows, Carolina Chickadees and House Finches were visibly and audibly
agitated by the buteo's presence, but never got up the nerve to mob it.

It was back again this a.m. hoping for more free eats.
