Hi,

Thank you for the notes below.

I am sorry if I am not using this listserv improperly. But youall have been
a big help and encouragement.

But it has been a comic, but frustrating struggle. Everyone has been very
helpful.

My new camera just came in today's mail. And I have figured out the first
10 pages of the instruction manual (out of 130 pages!!).

Now I have to go buy an SD card. I have plenty of batteries.

I did guess for a proper Anti-shake setting for max zoom. (i.e., I did not
shake like this 40 years ago!!!!)

Nice sunny day here, now where are all the yard birds when you need them???
LOL, LOL

more later on the saga of Joe's bird watching!!

pax,

Joe,

I've been birding over ten years, and it does my heart good to know that
someone else has the exact same problems that I have. I love birds and
birding, and I love trying to figure out what birds I have seen. I have
good eyes and surprisingly good ears. But my rather poor memory will keep
me from ever being a truly top-notch birder. I too take notes, and
sometimes it does me good, and sometimes it doesn't. So, I smiled when I
saw your post. Between you and me, even the experts sometimes let birds
remain unidentified. For every bird I identified for the OBBS this past
year, there was probably at least one that wasn't identified. Oh, well.

However, once you latch onto a trick, it usually stays with you, I have
found. That's the beauty of figuring out this stuff for yourself. I now
know that the (adult) red-shouldered hawk has light reddish stripes across
its breast, while the red-tail has darker streaks up and down. That helps
when the bird is perched.

The hairy woodpecker's bill is as long as its head is thick, while the downy
has a tiny little bill. That really helped this week, when I had a new yard
bird - a hairy woodpecker.

Good luck.
