A scouting trip early this morning to pin point owls for the up coming Carey Chrismas bird count was fairly sucessful. A total of 7 Screech Owls and a single Great Horned Owl were heard as they answered taped recordings of their calls.

A single medium sized owl, larger than a screech and smaller than a great horned, was spooked from the roadside in my headlights also. Pretty dark which makes me tend to believe that it was a Long eared owl. There are many pines and deciduous tangles in the area that will be checked later in the day.
