I found one Golden Eagle at the Wilds today. I was standing (freezing) at
the Jeffrey Point Birding Station looking towards the Visitors Center and
arose out of the crease of a hill was a bird that had remnants of juvenile
plumage. It had faint or fading whitish patches on the wing and at the base
of the tail. It's golden nape was clearly visible in perfect light.
Anyhow, the bird soared around the Wilds near the ground then ascended to an
amazing height with never beating a wing. I watched it through the scope
for a long time before it went into a stoop somewhere that I approximate as
being close to the cemetery off of Zion Ridge Road. I drove over there and
could not relocate the bird. No luck on the Shrike that I saw last week
either. Overall number of raptors is very low right now and more so
compared to when I was there a month ago. Maybe the vole population is not
having a good year and migrants that did stop there in early November have
moved on. Last, most of the water is frozen at the Wilds but I did find
some Ring-necked Ducks, Mallards and Canada Geese.
