Jim Redya or Marc Nolls have the final list and hopefully it will be on the
Ottawa webpage soon. Most of the area and much of the lake front was
frozen. There were about 55 species observed when I left but several were
of note.

21 Snow Geese (mixed flock) observed along the regular trails to the
north of the parking lot
1000+ Tundra Swans
23+ Trumpeter Swan
1 Mute Swan
1 Rough-legged Hawk (dark phase)
7+ Tree Swallow
2 Rusty Blackbird
6 Purple Finch

Marc and I observed an adult male Tree Swallow flying north along the dikes
NW of the parking lot about 10:00 AM. We could not relocate it after the
initial sighting but it could not have gone far as almost everything in the
area was frozen. After lunch, we were telling people at the visitor center
about the sighting when Rebecca Hinkle informed us that she had 5 swallows
over the pond out front in the morning which she felt were Tree Swallows.
At 1:30 PM while showing a couple a pair of Bald Eagle going through
courtship flight we observed 2 Tree Swallow flying high with the eagles
behind the visitor center. Jim and Marc had 2 more swallows in the
afternoon census on the northern part of the refuge. Try as we might, none
were Cave Swallows. Where did they come from and why?
