I went out in the snow today, as did several others I see from the postings. I started late in around at the Hogback Nature Preserve, what a pleasant way to spend a few hours. The windows overlook a beautiful wooded ravine, quite comfortable. List of highlights:
Hairy Woodpecker
Carolina Wren
Eastern Towhee
Purple Finches - 1 male 4 females
Fox Sparrow - 1
White-throated Sparrow
Chipping Sparrow
etc.
Next I drove over to the Delaware Wildlife area via N. Old State Road in Kilbourne to Leonardsburg Road. Right there after the sharp bend in the road near the split for McCurdy road in the field I saw 4 birds. Almost passed them off as Horned Larks, but they were intrepid Longspurs from Lapland. Had a really nice look at them. Also later on Hanover Road (via Panhandle road thru the wildlife area) I had a flock of 150 Horned Larks and in with them were two SNOW BUNTINGS. A 'gray ghost' N. Harrier strafed them all, causing a mass flight. Leonardsburg rd. thru the area, I had a perched ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.
Area Highlights:
Lapland Longspurs - 4
Snow Buntings - 2
Horned Larks - 190ish
Northern Harriers - 4
Rough-Legged Hawk - 1
Red-tailed Hawk
Am. Kestrel
Good Birding to you all.
