I had a great afternoon birding at Hoover!  A nice guy on the dam immediately pointed out a juvenile black-legged kittiwake that was with a mixed flock of ring-bills and bonapartes just North of the dam.  The bird flew several times up and over the dam and gave us great looks in the water on both sides of the dam.  Also at the dam were about 20 northern shovelers, 3 american wigeons, and hundreds of canadian geese and mallards.  With a scope, you could also make out a raft of redheads and scaups mixed with mallards just south of the first bridge north of the dam.  At oxbow, more geese (no cackling) and mallards were mixed with american black ducks, redheads, ring-necks and 5 northern pintails (three males, two females).  Also had a magnificent close flyover of 29 pintails (mostly males) heading south over the lake. I hope I'm as lucky at the O'shaughnessy CBC on Saturday!

Happy New Year!
