A phone call from the Shively party reports two flocks totaling 15-20
white-winged crossbills along the main road near the pit at Green Lawn
Cemetery in Columbus. They were in Sec 77, in hemlocks in the narrow
end. Very quiet while feeding, observers were surprised to see how many
birds were present when the birds left the site. No crossbills were
found at the site I mentioned yesterday. It seems patience, or luck, is
the requirement, but quite a few birds are around. A red-breasted
nuthatch was at the feeders at the pit. The pit is an old water-filled
quarry reached by following red stripes in the center of the entrance
road. This species continues its incursion and is worth looking for in
fruiting mature conifers anywhere in the state.
