I visited Kiwanis Park in Dublin today (just south of the intersection of US 33 and OH 161) hoping to find a Winter Wren but I was not successful. The open water from the springs held large numbers of Robins and good numbers of White-throated and Song Sparrows. I found two Carolina Wrens along the boardwalk along with a single Hermit Thrush. The small open water on the river near the 161 bridge had only mallards and geese.

I next started at the dam below Griggs Reservoir and headed south to the River Edge Office Complex just past 5th Avenue (refer to previous posts from Bob Royse). There is much open water in this stretch and I made several stops but could not locate my target bird which was a Wood Duck. There were good numbers of Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, Black Ducks and Mallards along with a few Common Goldeneye and Buffleheads. At River Edge, I did not see any Wood Ducks but there was a single Pied-billed Grebe.

Good January Birding
