After scouting some survey locations for territorial Great Horned Owls
in Champaign County, I stopped at the Oak Dale Cemetery at the
southern edge of Urbana. There was a small group of hemlocks towards
the center of the cemetery so I stopped and listened for a few
minutes. It was very quiet except for some quiet "crackling" sounds.
Intrigued, I walked around one of the trees and 23 WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS exploded from the backside of the tree. The group flew to
the other side of the cemetery but then came back after a short while.
From what I could tell, there were 21 males and 2 females.
