Thursday I finally got a chance to head out to Greenlawn Cemetery in
Columbus to hunt for the White-winged Crossbills. Arriving around
10:45 a.m., I started at the Bridge. At about 11:10, I heard a call
I'd listened to on the Cornell website the night before. Looking
up, I saw a single bird fly to the top of the tallest evergreen on
the east side of the bridge. It sat there for about a minute,
vocalizing, before dropping down into the tree. It was either a
female or immature male, but I was looking toward the south and up
into a bright sky, so the "color" was not distinct, although the
strong white wing bars and crossed beak were. I circled to the south
side of the bridge, but could never refind the bird through the maze
of branches on the south ridge.

I hunted through the Cemetery for another two hours, examining
conifer seed cones with the windows down (thankfully it was warmer
than recent days. I didn't see or hear any other activity, although
I saw other birders looking. A Division of Wildlife guy with a video
camera got my hopes up, but eventually he started filming a hole 30'
up a tree with some screeching raccoons sticking their heads out.
