Jan. 24 How to prepare a museum specimen

                        Julia Blyth and Will Heistand

We will meet at 2:00 p.m. in room 301 of the Science Center to learn how to
prepare museum specimens of birds. Julia and Will recently visited the
Smithsonian to tour the collection,

learn about specimen preparation and prepare specimens for the Smithsonian.
They are preparing a power point presentation on techniques by photographing
the preparation of a specimen.

After their illustrated presentation they will supervise as you prepare your
own specimen for deposition in the Ohio Wesleyan University Museum
collection. Join us to learn about museum preparation

and spend a cold afternoon in the warm, friendly atmosphere.

Jan. 25 Castalia, Cleveland waterfront

If the weather is cold, we will start at Castalia where many waterfowl spend
the winter on the large spring in the center of town. We will then travel
to Sandusky Bay to look for diving ducks

(e.g., Greater and Lesser scaup) and Bald Eagles. We will travel east with
occasional stops to look along the shore for gulls (Glaucous, Iceland,
Herring, Ring-billed, Bonaparte's, Greater and Lesser

Black-backed, possibly a Thayer's Gull) and on the open water for diving
ducks (Greater and Lesser scaup, American Goldeneye, Canvasback, Redhead,
Bufflehead, and scoters).

We will finish in the mid-afternoon with a visit to the 42nd St. marina in
search of additional gulls and diving ducks. On the return trip we will
stop to look for Black-capped Chickadees,

which are replaced by Carolina Chickadees in central Ohio. Cold weather is
best for this trip and the lakefront can be very cold so dress warmly. Also
bring some money, as we will stop for a quick, hot lunch.

Contact Jed Burtt ([log in to unmask]) if you wish to meet and go with the
OWU group.

Jan. 26 Mongolia: land of blue sky

                        Barbara and Stephen Revard

Join us for a journey to Mongolia. As part of a National Science Foundation
project Barbara Revard

traveled to Mongolia to work with researchers studying Pallas' cats, takhi
or Przewalski's horse, and the ecology of the Mongolian steppes. The
project teamed zoo education staff and Mongolian

wildlife biologists with classroom teachers from around the United States.
After the research project the Revards traveled around central Mongolia to
look for wildlife generally and birds in particular,

cultural ruins and a paved road. They were mostly successful, although the
paved road didn't go very far!

Barbara is Director of Program Planning at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium
