Inspired by Ben's mention of the BELTED KINGFISHER at MVNU, I went over
there looking for it yesterday and came up empty handed, though I was
being too lazy probably. These kingfishers have always fascinated me
since I saw them in the field guide but I was unaware that there was a
species in Ohio (I am a newbie) until Ben mentioned it.

Having coffee this morning, in my living room, I gazed out at the
Kokosing and saw the silhouette of a squat bird with a thick bill
perched on a branch over the river. Dashed for my binos and just had
enough time to see a closeup that made me think it was the kingfisher
before it took off. I walked over to the road above where it was
perched too scout around but failed to find where it went.

Back inside another ten minutes later and it was perched out in its spot
again. This time I made it close enough to get a nice long look of it.
Definitely a BELTED KINGFISHER. Really a cool looking bird and since I
am new thats pretty exciting.

Austin
