The Sax Zim Bog Winter Bird Festival is February 13-15th 2009 in Meadowlands, Minnesota.  Meadowlands Minnesota is only 40-45 minutes northwest of Duluth.

This area so far is producingGreat Gray Owls, Northern Hawk Owls and in Duluth Boreal Owls are beginning to show up in several areas along the north shore of Lake Superior and in residential areas in Duluth.  Snowy Owls are also being found in the Duluth harbor.  If there is a time to view northern owls in northeastern Minnesota this is the year. Please plan on joining us this year at the  Sax Zim Bog Winter Bird Festival.

The festival speakers are Al Batt and Larry Weber.

* We have room for 35 more birders to join the festival. We currently have 142 registered birders from all over the United States that are anxious in viewing the winter birds of northern Minnesota. Please come and join us!

Winter Bird Specialties:
- * Barrow's Goldeneye (currently being seen in the canal park area of Duluth)
- Sharp-tailed Grouse (Aitkin Co. trips will see several birds displaying on a lek)
- Ruffed Grouse
- Thayer's Gull ( very good chance in seeing on the Duluth trips )
- Glaucous Gull ( very good chance in seeing on the Duluth trips )
- Iceland Gull ( a fair chance in seeing on the Duluth trips )
- Snowy Owl ( should be able to find one in the harbor )
- Northern Hawk Owl ( several owls in the "bog" )
- Great Gray Owl ( a lot sightings in Sax Zim Bog area )
- Boreal Owl ( several sightings in the last two weeks in the Duluth area. )
- American Three-toed Woodpecker ( Both woodpecker species have been found fairly consistently in the "bog" this winter )
- Black-backed Woodpecker
- Northern Shrike
- Gray Jay ( feed some by hand )
- Boreal Chickadee ( several feeders in the "bog" have them )
- Bohemian Waxwing ( not a good year for Bohemians - very hard to find )
- Snow Bunting
- Pine Grosbeak
- White-winged Crossbill ( very good year for them )
- Red Crossbill ( not many sightings this winter )
- Common Redpolls
- Hoary Redpolls ( a lot of sightings this winter )
- Evening Grosbeak
