I recommend a couple of Web sites for folks who may be deprived of
birding time in the field in the coming days. The first is probably not
for everyone, but the AOU has improved its site, and it's worth a look
if you used the old one. I recommend the Check-list page
http://www.aou.org/checklist/north/ --where interesting as always are
the Proposals pages.
The other is for pretty much everyone. Go the this site
http://www.flickr.com/ , and enter into the search panel the English
name of almost any bird . In this way you can access an amazing number
of good photos of numerous species. My tests came back with 116 images
of Hammond's flycatcher, 2272 pine siskins, 17 black-capped petrels,
131 brown hawk-owls, 111 island scrub-jays, 34 long-billed murrelets,
and 371 ivory-billed woodpeckers: there'll probably be more when you
check. Give it a try. This is a great way to study the field appearance
of various species, check plumage details on real birds, see things you
seldom find in field guides like raised crests, underwings, etc., etc.
Bear in mind that the ID of the species in the photos is attested to
only by the photographers, but those so inclined can look for errors, too.
Hunkering down in Columbus,
Bill Whan
