After successfully chasing the Black-legged Kittiwake that's been at
Hoover Lake, north of Columbus, I made several stops off I-71 on the way
home to Cincinnati. Between the Route 72 exit, where I got off, and the
Williamsburg Road exit, where I got back on, American Kestrels were
pleasantly common - I counted seven.

A stop at Melvin Stone Company, just off U.S. 22 east of Wilmington,
produced about 3000 waterfowl, including 1500 Canada Geese, 5 Snow
Geese, 2000 Mallards, 300 American Black Ducks, 25 Gadwall, 2 Ruddy
Ducks, and a Bufflehead. I know, that doesn't add up, but they're just
guesses anyway. There was a Black Vulure over U.S. 22 on the way into
Wilmington.

Caesar Creek Lake was nearly empty. From the end of Harveysburg Road,
decoys outnumbered the 4 Mallards, 9 Lesser Scaup, 3 Common Goldeneye, 1
Bufflehead, and 3 Pied-billed Grebes. The beach across the lake seemed
empty, but I checked it anyway. It wasn't empty - there were several
kids and dogs running around.

The feeders at the Visitor Center seem to have unusal birds fairly
frequently. Today was no exception, as a flock of 50 American
Goldfinches on the ground below the feeder behind the center were joined
by one Common Redpoll.
