Employees and volunteers conducted the seventh annual Winter Bird Count on
the Athens Ranger District, Athens Unit of the Wayne this past Sunday,
Jan. 4th. We dropped the 15-mile circle last year and instead concentrate
on certain areas of the Forest within the Unit boundaries so I guess
technically we can't call it the Christmas Bird Count. The weather was
dreary and we got the lowest number of species to date but as always had a
good time! The highlight of the day was the immature bald eagle on Burr
Oak Reservoir....which reminds me is there not a Mid-winter eagle survey
this year?? Haven't seen or I missed the info on it. Anyway, special
thanks to Ann Cramer, Katrina Schultes, super-spotter Shaune Skinner and
Robin Wright-Strauss for participating. Mark down Jan. 3, 2010 for next
year's efforts. We always go out on the first Sunday of the new year
following New Year's Day and welcome your participation.
