On a quick morning walk through my fields by the power lines, I saw a
light phase rough-legged hawk fly by, pausing once to hover overhead.
Heading west. For the underachiever's January list, this was an
unexpected bird number 41.

The resident northern shrike also showed up, perched on top of a young
spruce tree behind the house in the new development along the
property line.

A flock of over 30 robins was flying from apple tree to apple tree,
picking
through the remaining fruits. I was hoping to find a cedar waxwing
among them
to add to my modest list, but none have showed up here this month.

Several pine siskins are still coming to the thistle feeders by the
house.

No house sparrows here today, but I expect to see over fifty in
Cleveland
Heights this afternoon at my mum's house. A regular mob, that can often
top 100.
