A hike through several spots in 3-Creeks MetroPark (south Columbus) produced little in the way of unusual birds, although resident were out in force despite the cold. The highlight was a Great Horned Owl being mobbed by a Cooper's Hawk. Perhaps 'mobbed' is too strong a word, but the hawk was giving a long call that I've only heard them give around big owls. It's a very long (3-5 second) 'keck-keck-keck-....', noticeably longer than their territorial call. Two passing Crows knew what was up right away, and came down to join in the mobbing. I've heard this call given for Barred and Great Horned, but nothing else yet. I guess these large owls must be a threat to Cooper's Hawks in some way; perhaps they prey on juvenile hawks.
