Following up on Russ' report from Lima of having Red-winged Blackbirds at
his feeder, I, too, can report one in my yard today. I live in Clintonville, a
suburb on the north side of Columbus. I'm excited to have seen - and heard
- this bird in my yard this morning because it is my personal first sign of
spring!

Previous "first dates" of seeing them in my yard are:
2005 - March 11
2006 - Feb. 25
2007 - March 3
2008 - Feb. 18

In some years I saw them somewhere else before I saw one in my yard. In
some years I had the first grackle or brown-headed cowbird of the season in my
yard before the first red-winged blackbird. In every year I heard of them
being seen elsewhere in Ohio before I saw one in my yard. No matter... spring
is here now as far as I'm concerned!
