I live in Pennsylvania and made a birding trip into Ohio the weekend of
Feb. 14. I visited three places: 1)The Short Creek Boat Launch, near
Rayland, along the Ohio River 2)the Dickinson Cattle Range near
Barnesville, and 3)Hocking Hills.
Saw some nice wintering birds and possibly some signs of migration.
1)At Short Creek Boat Launch there were about 100 Canvasbacks, a few
Redheads and Hooded Mergansers, and a Horned Grebe. Theres some really
neat looking marsh habitat there.
2)At the cattle ranch: 4 Rough-legged Hawks(2 dark, 2 light morphs)and a
single Snow Bunting. Also, a flock of about 50 Red-winged Blackbirds and
at least one bird singing alone from a tree top and acting like he was
trying to establish territory.
3)At Hocking Hills at least 14 White-winged Crossbills, in three groups.
Two of the groups were flyovers, and the third group, of 5, fed in a
spruce tree at Cedar Falls Parking Lot. Also, 3 Red-breasted Nuthatches
and 1 Pine Siskin.
I like to think the few Killdeers and Common Grackles around Lake Logan
were early migrants. Even with all the crossbills I'm eager for spring.
