Abouy 3 PM Jim Hickman called to say that there were White-winged Crossbills in the Sugar Grove Cemetary in Wilmington. Lenna Mae and I rushed out and had a great view of a small flock (3 males, 3 females) feeding in an old Hemlock tree. Shortly after Bob Powell and Beth Mitchell checked out the site and could not locate the birds which had apparently moved to another spot.

That cemetary has a history of attracting crossbills, going back to the 1880s. About twenty years ago Frank Renfrow and I found a small group of Red Crossbills there. They were later seen by Worth Randle, Rick Counts and many others. Some years after that I saw a White-winged Crossbill at a feeder close to the cemetary. These birds are very special gems and I hope they will stick around for several days at least.
