Julie Karlson, Brian Menker, and I were at Buck Creek State Park this
morning. We looked over the lake from the old boat ramp at the north end
of the lake and spotted a Glaucous Gull. It was a first winter bird,
mostly white with a large head and bill that had a light base and a
black tip. We got to compare it both to Ring-billed and Herring Gulls.
Then we drove farther north and took the lane off Grant Road that leads
down to the lake. Soon we spotted another light colored gull. It moved
and we found it a few minutes later and saw that it was slightly smaller
than nearby Herring Gulls. It was a first winter Iceland Gull. We looked
around for about 1 1/2 hours after that and got even closer looks at the
Iceland Gull but couldn't find the Glaucous Gull again. The Iceland Gull
was slightly smaller than the Herring Gulls with a daintier head and a
mostly black bill with just a tiny lighter area at the base of the bill.
There were probably 2000+ gulls at the lake today.

We also found 12 species of ducks at the reservoir and Old Reid Park
including at least 20 Canvasbacks and 8 Green-winged Teal.
