Today was a remarkable birding day. A good start to the morning then on to the Guilford Lake / Salem Reservoir / Seven Springs Area in northern Columbiana County to add 16 more waterfowl species to our day, making a total of 18. There were small areas of open water at each of the three locations. Here is the list:
Canada Goose 250+
Mute Swan 6
Gadwall 12
American Widgeon 4
American Black Duck 30+
Mallard 20+
Northern Pintail 8 males , 6 females
Green-winged Teal 6 males , 2 females
Canvasback 25+
Redhead 40+
Ring-necked Duck 10 pairs+
Lesser Scaup 1 male
Bufflehead 2 males
Common Goldeneye 9 males , 2 females
Hooded Merganser 3 males , 2 females
Common Merganser 6 males , 2 females
Compliments of a phone call from Jim Dolan at 3PM, we were able to add a wonderful finish to our day by seeing about 30 White-winged Crossbills and about
20 Pine Siskins in Carol Bretz's backyard in New Waterford.
