The White-winged Crossbills at Highland Park Cemetery (first reported by Inga Schmidt last week) remain in the Douglas Firs near the cemetery's Northfield Road entrance. There were at least 10 present this afternoon. Two - possibly three - Red-breasted Nuthatches accompanied them. A Turkey Vulture flew low overhead as I watched the Crossbills.

This cemetery has Douglas Firs throughout, so there are quite a few areas with what appears to be the Crossbills' preferred cones. The cemetery is in Cleveland's eastern suburbs on the Beachwood/Shaker Heights/Warrensville Heights border. The entrance is on Northfield Road just south of the dreaded Chagrin/Van Aken/Warrensville Center/Northfield intersection.

Red-winged Blackbirds may be the harbingers of spring in more rural areas, but here in the inner ring suburbs it is the Grackles. The first of the spring returned to our Cleveland Heights backyard on Monday.
