This week's highlight continues to be the White-winged Crossbill
invasion with birds still being reported throughout Ohio and waterfowl
numbers appeared to be on the increase.

Greater White-fronted Geese: Craig Holt reported that two were in the
bottom lands of Franklin Square located in northern Columbiana County on
the 14th. The Lane's reported the geese were in the same general area on
the 15th. Bob Foppe reported that four were at Melvin Quarry on the
19th. The Compiler saw two at Spring Valley WA on the 19th.

Snow Goose: Craig Holt reported that one was in the bottom lands of
Franklin Square located in northern Columbiana County on the 14th. Tom
Bain reported that one was at Circleville Quarry on the 14th. Rob Thorn
reported that one was at Hoover Reservoir on the 14th. Bob Foppe
reported one was at Melvin Quarry on the 19th.

Cackling Goose: William Hull reported that two were at Armleder Park on
the 13th. John Zahnen reported that three were at Armleder on the 14th.
John Pogacnik observed one during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the
15th.

Blue-winged Teal: The Compiler observed two early teal at Spring Valley
WA on the 19th.

White-winged Scoter: John Pogacnik observed one during the Lakeshore
Waterbird Survey on the 15th. Joe Meara reported that six were at Hoover
Reservoir near the Oxbow boat ramp on the 15th.

Horned Grebe: Rob Royse reported that one was on the lake at Deer Creek
SP on the 15th.

Red-necked Grebe: Scott Albaugh reported that one was at the Rayland
Marina in Jefferson County on the 13th. Becky Szabo reported the bird
was still present on the 14th.

Rough-legged Hawk: Bill Rinehart reported that two were at Killdeer
Plains WA on the 15th. Andrew Morrison found nine in the East
Middlefield area and three in the North Bloomfield area on the 15th.
Albert Scruggs reported that one was at Fernald on the 16th. One was
reported at Maumee Bay SP on the 16th.

Merlin: Bill Zimmerman reported that two were at Old St. Joseph's
Cemetery on the 14th. Lou Gardella reported that four were at Calvary
Cemetery on the 15th. Rob Royse reported that one was near the marina at
Deer Creek SP on the 15th.

Sandhill Crane: Frank Frick reported that four flew into Miami
Whitewater wetlands on the 13th. Bob Foppe found 35 at a gravel pit
operated by Highland Stone near Hillsboro on the 15th.

American Woodcock: Shane Egleston flushed one behind the park office at
Caesar Creek SP on the 14th. Glen Crippen reported that two were calling
and flying around his property in Morgan County on the 15th. Kirk
Westendorf located three displaying at French Park on the 15th.

Thayer's Gull: Gabe Leidy reported that one second-cycle and one adult
was present at E 72nd St on the 13th. John Pogacnik reported a
first-cycle during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 15th.

Iceland Gull: Accidental inland, Doug Overacker reported that one
first-cycle was at Buck Creek SP on the 15th. Sightings from the more
expected locations include Gabe Leidy's report that two first-cycle
birds were at Lorain Harbor on the 13th. At E 72nd St Gabe Leidy found a
first-cycle bird on the 13th. John Pogacnik observed a third-cycle and
an adult during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 13th. John
Pogacnik observed one adult during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the
15th.

Lesser Black-backed Gull: Gabe Leidy reported that three adults were at
E 72nd St on the 13th. John Pogacnik observed a third-cycle and an adult
during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 13th and a third-cycle on
the 15th.

Glaucous Gull: Casual inland, Doug Overacker reported that one was at
the north end of the lake at Buck Creek SP near the old boat ramp on the
15th. Observations at the more expected sites included Gabe Leidy's
report that four first-cycle birds were present at Lorain Harbor on the
13th. At E 72nd St Gabe found one first-cycle, one second-cycle and one
adult on the 13th. John Pogacnik observed one first-cycle during his
Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 13th and on the 14th he saw one
first-cycle. John Pogacnik observed one first-cycle and one adult during
his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 15th.

Snowy Owl: Greg Cudworth reported that one was near gate 13 at the edge
of the runway at Burke Airport on the 15th. Matt Valencic saw the owl
sitting on a concrete structure at the east end of the airport on the
17th.

Northern Shrike: Tom Bain reported one was at the end of Wildlife Road
10 at Delaware WA on the 13th. Rob Royse reported that one continues in
the area of the beach at Deer Creek SP on the 15th. Craig Holt observed
an immature bird along Rte 11 in Plymouth Twp in Ashtabula County on the
16th. Bob Foppe and Bill Doss reported that the Deer Creek shrike
continued through the 19th. One is still being seen along the causeway
at MaGee Marsh.

Red-breasted Nuthatch: Suzanne Wagner reported that one was present at
the West Woods MP nature center feeders on the 13th. Blake Andrews
reported that one was at the feeders at West Woods MP on the 15th. One
was at Swan Creek Cemetery on the 16th. Lisa Rainsong reported that two
or three were at Highland Park Cemetery on the east side of Cleveland on
the 17th.

Hermit Thrush: Lukas Padegimus observed one in Hocking Hills SP on the
16th.

Savannah Sparrow: Steve Wolfe reported one was in Upper Arlington on the
15th.

Fox Sparrow: Bill Stanley reported that one was on the south side of
East Fork SP on the 13th. The sparrow that has been visiting a feeder
near the Toledo Botanical Gardens continues as of the 17th.

Lapland Longspur: Richard Ester found good numbers along CH112 in
Wyandot County on the 13th.

Snow Bunting: Richard Ester found good numbers along CH112 in Wyandot
County on the 13th.

Rusty Blackbird: Chris Knoll reported hearing one behind the BSBO office
on Rte 2 on the 13th. Gina Buckey reported that 14 were at the Hebron
Fish Hatchery on the 13th. In Butler County on the 14th Mike Busam
reported that 120 were near Big Pond at Seward Rd and at least four were
at Gilmore Ponds. Larry Roche reported that 325 were at Barberton on the
14th. Tom Bain reported five were along Island Rd north of Circleville
on the 14th. James Cole reported that one was at Secor MP on the 17th.
Dan Gesualdo observed approximately 40 along Rte 113 just south of the
Thunderbird Hills Golf Course on the 18th.

Baltimore Oriole: The Bobolink Hotline reports that one was present in
Knox County over the weekend. Take Rte 3 south to Nunda Rd and turn
right. Go to the general store and ask for further directions. This is
probably the same oriole that was seen in this area in early January.

Red Crossbill: Suzanne Wagner reported that one was singing in the
parking lot of West Woods MP nature center parking lot, in Geauga
County, on the 13th.

White-winged Crossbill: Richard Ester along with a group of birders from
Parkersburg WV found 12-plus at Oak Hill Cemetery on the 13th. Greg
Cudworth reported that 12 were at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent on the
13th. Rick Asamoto discovered two at Miami Cemetery in the Village of
Corwin, Warren County, on the 14th. One visited a backyard feeder in
Lake Twp outside of Millbury on the 14th and 15th. Jim Dolan reported
that 110 had been seen in a yard in Franklin Square in Columbiana County
on the 14th. Bob and Denise Lane reported that 30 were in the backyard
of Carol Bretz on the 15th. Bill Fissell observed four at his
Brecksville yard on the 15th. Lee Gruber reported that nine were in
section 31 at Spring Grove Cemetery on the 15th. Forty-plus were at
Woodlawn Cemetery on the 15th. Bob Royse observed four on Pond Lick Run
in Shawnee SF on the 15th. About 30 were at Swan Creek Cemetery on the
16th. Some were heard at Oak Openings MP on the 16th. Jim Fry reported
that three were at his feeders in Hocking County on the 16th. Ann Cramer
reported that 20-25 were in her neighbor's yard in Hocking County on the
16th. Brian Parsons observed ten at Holden Arboretum on the 16th. Lisa
Rainsong noted that there were 10 at Highland Park Cemetery on the 17th.
Rick Counts watched a dozen at Oak Hill Cemetery on the 19th.

Common Redpoll: Richard Ester reported finding 12-plus feeding on the
ground at the main office of Killdeer Plains WA on the 13th. Suzanne
Wagner reported that three were at the West Woods NC feeders on the 13th
and were seen by many observers through at least the 15th. Nancy
Anderson reported one was at her Richmond Heights feeder on the 14th.
John Pogacnik had one at his feeders on the 14th. Lou Gardella reported
that two were at his feeder in Garfield Heights on the 15th.

Pine Siskin: Suzanne Wagner reported that 60 were at the West Woods NC
feeders on the 13th. Greg Cudworth reported that 34 were at Standing
Rock Cemetery on the 13th. Craig Holt reported that several were in
Poland Twp in Mahoning County on the 13th. Nancy Anderson reported one
was at her Richmond Heights feeder on the 14th. Donald Morse, Jr.
reported that 40 were at his New Richmond feeder on the 14th. Bill
Stanley reported that eight were at the Cincinnati Nature Center feeders
on the 14th. John Pogacnik had two dozen at his feeders on the 14th.
Charles Klaus had many visiting siskins in Kirtland. Robert Herp
reported that siskins were "plentiful" at Holden Arboretum on the 15th.
Bob and Denise Lane reported that 20 were in the backyard of Carol Bretz
on the 15th. Bill Fissell observed two at his Brecksville yard on the
15th. Jim Fry reported that 63 were at his feeders in Hocking County on
the 16th. Siskins continued at the feeder of Dorothy Dawson-Sheldon in
Wakeman on the 16th. Bruce Lombardo observed 49 at his Highland County
feeder on the 17th. Robert Morton had eight at his Fremont feeder on the
18th. Mike Sandy reported on the 19th he still had siskins coming to his
feeder in Rocky River. Craig Holt had a vocal bird calling at Lake
Milton on the 19th.
