Waterfowl variety was respectable at Hoover Reservoir today. The southern
portion, especially from the Smothers Road Bridge to the dam, has the most areas
 of open water. The greatest open areas are along the eastern shore and below
the  dam. The northern part of the reservoir is mostly iced over but does
have spotty  open places with the birds congregating around these open spots.
Species  observed included:

Canada Geese [massive numbers]
Snow Goose    {1 sole individual mixed with a flock of  Canada's]
Mallards    [everywhere and in high numbers]
American Black Ducks    [decent numbers - overflow from  nearby Blendon Woods
Metro Park?]
American Wigeon
Northern Shoveler
Canvasback    [good numbers across from the East Walnut  Boat Ramp]
Redhead
Ring-necked Duck
Lesser Scaup
Bufflehead
Common Goldeneye
Hooded Merganser
Red-breasted Merganser    [very good numbers along the  east shore]

Also:
Great Blue Herons    [below dam]
Turkey Vultures    [numbers beginning to climb  daily]
Black Vultures    [3 - the species is becoming more  common at Hoover
Reservoir]
Northern Harriers    [soaring over fields along  Miller-Paul Road]
