The White-winged Crossbill invasion must really be reaching a crescendo, because six individuals showed up in our backyard in Rocky River today Fri 2/6/09.  At 1:00 PM we noticed 4 females feeding on our Canadian hemlock cones.  They stayed around about 45 minutes then took off.  A little later a Cooper's Hawk showed up and caught what I think was a House Sparrow, at least I know it wasn't a crossbill.  Things were quiet for a time while the Coop was eating his lunch, as you can imagine.  But he eventually took off and about 4:00 PM one male and one female crossbill showed up in the same hemlock.  They both stayed around until the light faded.  Marian and Jeff Kraus also got to see them.  We also have a tall blue spruce tree with lots of cones at the top but the crossbills didn't seem to be interested in them.  First really good birds we've had in our backyard this winter!
