Hello All,
Milder temperatures today made birding at The Wilds quite enjoyable, though it was pretty windy throughout the day. Overall raptor numbers seem to be down a bit this year, but several dark and light-morph Rough-legged Hawks put on quite a show throughout the day. It wasn't until just after 3:00 PM, however, that the prize of the day made her grand appearance. As we were "on watch" near the main entrance, a very large, adult Golden Eagle was spotted up near the main parking area and flew straight down the entrance road toward us. At its' closest point, the bird was no more than about 100 feet from the car, offering stunning looks at key field marks from all angles. The bird soared briefly above the wooded area across the road, gained altitude as it was chased by a rough-legged hawk, and was last seen heading toward Prouty Road. Other raptor species seen in the area include several Red-tailed Hawks, a Northern Harrier, three American
 Kestrels, and two Turkey Vultures.

Good Birding!
