Friday an immature Cooper's hawk with a newly killed mourning dove spent nearly 2 hours in the evergreen outside my office windows defending its prey . . . from the series of refections of itself it must have seen in the windows.  It crouched with its head menacingly low, its wings held out from its body and its feathers ruffled to make it look about twice its size, and it repeatedly cried out in what Sibley described as a "squeaky whistle."  I couldn't rescue it from its enemies by turning off the office lights until my clients left.  Once the lights went off, the young hawk stood up, glanced around and flew to the ground to enjoy its long delayed dinner.  I suppose it's possible the hawk mistook the reflections for its parents returning with more goodies, but the cry and the behavior sure sounded and looked more like threatening than begging!  Pam Unger

The pine tree, the leopard, the Platte River, and ourselves--we are at risk together, or we are on our way to a sustainable world together. We are each other's destiny. --Mary Oliver
