3/19/09 in the am, beautiful blue sky, nice sun, but very cold.

1. The Magee Marsh Causeway now has two Northern Shrikes. One was at the
duck sign way down at the third pull-off and one by the bridge - first
pull-off area. Both birds were on the west side of the marsh. If you go, be
patient, they disappear into the tall grasses for several minutes and
eventually fly-up onto a shrub or tree. Look for a very pale gray bird about
the size of a Blue jay. Watch high on the small trees and shrubs in the
marsh. Good Luck birders.

2. Also seen early in the morning was a beautiful yellow-breasted bird in
the short grassy area as you turn the sharp bend on the causeway. It was an
Eastern Meadowlark showing off its beautiful yellow chest until I got to
close and then it layed down in the grass. Its back was the same color as
the grass and it disappeared; nice work meadowlark.

3. Benton Carroll Road ducks seen this morning around 9:00 am.

   1. Gadwall- 14
   2. American Black Duck - 12+
   3. Mallard - more than 50
   4. Northern Pintail - still 20 present
   5. Green-winged Teal - 6
   6. Ring-necked Duck - 2; the male showed-off his chestnut neck when he
stretched it straight up into the air. The band of chestnut looked like a
ring. I finally saw it for the first time in my life.

4. Black Swamp Bird Observatory

      1. Eastern Towhee - heard behind our building near the walking trail.

      2. EASTERN MEADOWLARK - 1

5. The Magee Marsh swans and ducks seen this morning around 9:30 am.

1. Mute Swan - 2
2. Trumpeter Swan - 4
3. Tundra Swan - several
4. Gadwall - several
5. A. Wigeon - several
6. A. Black Duck - 4
7. Mallard - many
8. Green-winged Teal - 4
