Ohio Birders,

White-winged Crossbills are still being seen here in the NW, but appear to be thinning out and/or spreading out rapidly. There were positive reports on Saturday, Feb 28th from both Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo and Swan Creek Cemetery in Monclova Township. Tim Haney checked in from Woodlawn having found two small groups was all, totalling ~20 individuals.

Barely across the line in Michigan, the flock that had called my subdivision home over the last 8 weeks has apparently disappeared, and generally speaking, numbers of White-winged Crossbills across the southern lower peninsula have decreased substantially.

It seems a hair early for these birds to be returning north, but apparently that is what they are up to. As this species potentially could nest in Ohio after such an invasion, be sure to stay sharp and on the lookout for these northerners, especially if paired up. Here in the northwest, the Oak Openings and Maumee State Forest are by far the most likely locations to produce late season sightings/potential breeding areas.
