On Monday, March 30, I found a single Barn Swallow at Toussaint Wildlife
Area, Ottawa Co., n.w. Ohio. This isn't record-early, but it's still
notable to have the species here any time before April. Also of interest
were at least 22 Fox Sparrows, several of them singing. (Chances are good
that areas of woods nearer the lake had much higher numbers, but I didn't
check those today.) I estimated at least 400 Rusty Blackbirds scattered
around the swampy woods of the site, and I wouldn't consider that number
unusual; there are certainly thousands of Rusties in Ottawa and Lucas
counties right now.
