Prompted by Bill's post about unusual inland gulls, I decided to share my observations from yesterday. While picking up a car from my Zanesville mechanic yesterday, I stopped by Putnam's Landing (just downriver from the Sixth Street bridge) to check the assortment of gulls and waterfowl. My lifer red-necked grebe came from this spot a few years ago, and you never know. Prompted by the recent reports I though that maybe something strange might have dropped in, but no dice. There were roughly 300 gulls swarming around the park and the waters adjacent to Lock No. 10 on the opposite bank, but I saw only 3 herring gulls among the ring-billed throng. The usual assortment of domestic and mongrel waterfowl were accompanied by numerous mallards, 4 black ducks and one female bufflehead.

Since I arrived home Monday night I have heard killdeer, and I saw one grackle under the feeders this morning. I'm going to check for woodcocks this evening. They have been diminishing here in recent years - at least I have seen and heard less of them, although my observations and chances to observe have been sporadic due to out-of-state business travel.
