Had our first Ruby-throated at our hummingbird feeder this morning. Time
to get those feeders out!
In other birding news here in SE Ohio, a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers spent
about a week excavating a nest hole in a dead Big-tooth Aspen in our front
yard. As mentioned in Birds of North America, the male did the majority of
the excavating, while the female watched. It's a good life ;-) I haven't
seen either of them at the nest hole for about a week - I hope that means
the female is in there incubating. I don't want to disturb them if they
are in there - they are very wary.
Finally, we spent about 3 hours last night trying to call up Great Horned
or Eastern Screech Owls in a couple of our OBBA blocks. It was perfect
weather for owling - calm as can be and not too cold. Unfortunately, the
owls did not agree - one distant screech owl was all we heard.
Good birding,
Janet S. Duerr
