Emil Bacik and I made the trek to Jefferson Co. today to search for the elusive Corvus corax. After spending most of the morning birding roads around Fernwood State Forest and the forest itself, we struck gold in the early afternoon. A single bird treated us to prolonged, close-range views, and we later refound this bird in the exact same spot. The location was just west of the "Natureworks" dam mentioned in the previous post on CR-26, west also of the road leading to the two vistas and Little Round Top picnic area. Just beyond the dam, make a sharp left onto a dirt road which opens up into an immense reclaimed strip mine area, and is apparently a horse-riding area, and continue on this entrance road for a approximately a half mile or so (right before the road gets rough). There are several powerline tiedowns in this immediate area.

Other birds in the area included:

Sandhill Crane 17
Pectoral Sandpiper 1
Common Snipe 1
Northern Bobwhite 2
Great Horned Owl 1 nest on powerline tower
Yellow-throated Warbler 1
Louisiana Waterthrush 1

Good birding -
