I had a couple of free hours this morning to make a whirlwind loop around the Zaleski SF. I haven't had much time to speak of to bird this spring and I picked up 27 new yearbirds today. That number is more reflective of my lack of time with the binoculars that any real influx of early arrivals. I saw pretty much the species that I would have expected for the date there. If anything, things may be a bit behind schedule, but that could change really quickly with the southerly winds tonight.

I saw 18 species of warblers at Zaleski :
Blue-winged
N Parula
Yellow
Yellow-rumped
B-t Green
Blackburnian
Sycamore
Pine
Prairie
Cerulean
B&W
A Redstart
Prothonotary
Worm-eating
Ovenbird
LA
CYellowthroat
Hooded

And now for my annual rant. If it's OK to spell wigeon with a "d" on this listserve, please let me call them Syacamores. At least I spelled it right. I hate "yellow-throated" with a passion. If I was on the AOU committee my very top priority would be to change the common name of Dendroica domina. We already have enough yellowthroated birds, thank you.

Other birds at Zaleski included Broad-winged Hawk, Great Crested Flycatcher, E Phoebes, W-e, Y-t, and R-e Vireos, B-g Gnatcatchers, Wood Thrushes, Scarlet Tanagers, an Indigo Bunting, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles. There was no sign yet of KY, Y-Chat, Summer Tanager, or R-b Grosbeak, but I would expect them to be there soon, possibly on tonight's S winds.

Henslow's Sparrows are present in the fields near Mt. Pleasant (and probably every other place in Ohio that they nest), but I didn't hear and Grasshopper Sparrows yet.

Additional species noted on a quick drive by of Lake Logan on the way home included Green Heron and Warbling Vireo.

There was a good assortment of migrants in my backyard in Columbus this afternoon when I got home. In addition to the resident Sycamores and N Parula that have been here a while now, there were too many Y-rumps to count, ~5 B-t Greens, a Blackburnian, Yellow, CYellowthroat, 2 Nashvilles, several R-c Kinglets, and a B-h Vireo.

Cliff Swallows have been present for at least a few days now on the Granview/I-670 bridges and can be seen when driving by on the Grandview Ave. entrance/exit ramps going to or coming from the west.
