I spent part of Cinco de Mayo roaming two bvery different habitats in this southern Columbus suburb. One was an old towpath that has grown into an odd strip of linear wet forest. Groveport was a port on the old canal, and has preserved a nice stretch east of town. The other was Richardson Road parkland, an old farm/nursery that has overgrown into successional meadows punctuated by clusters of old tree plantings (oaks, spruces, and sweetgums being the primary trees). You can wander footpaths through this unusual habitat, occasionally stumbling upon remnants of the old farm. Naturally the bird list from these two spots is a bit unusual, with the following notables from a half hour in each spot:

Flycatchers - Crested and Least along the towpath, but no Willows at the old farm yet (they breed there)

Vireos - singing Red-eyed & Warbling along the towpath, with White-eyed in the old farm

Wrens,Gnatcatcher - House Wrens everywhere in both spots, but only 1-2 gnatcatchers in each

Thrushes,Mimids - modest numbers of Swainsons (3) and Wood (3) scattered along the towpath, while Catbirds were abundant in both places. Only the old farm had 2 Brown Thrashers.

Warblers - Yellow (8-10 in the old farm fields), Nashville (1-2 at each), Magnolia (1 towpath), Chesnut-sided (1 towpath), Yellow-rumped (3-4 along the towpath), Ovenbird (1 towpath), N.Waterthrush (1 towpath, on the old canal), Common Yellowthroat (1 towpath, 5-6 old farm), Hooded (1 towpath), Yellow-br.Chat (2 old farm)

Sparrows - 5-6 White-throats and 3-4 Chipping were along the towpath, while the old farm had 7-8 Fields and 6+ Song Sparrows. Both sites had 2 singing E.Towhees.

Orioles - 1 Baltimore was along the towpath, while 2 Orchards were singing in the old farm

Finches - lots of Goldfinches at both sites, but the towpath still had a late PINE SISKIN
