Jean,

I looked at the on-line Cornell web site "The Birds of North America" and
it looks like your Parula really was nest building.  As your research
showed, the nest site is usually in a hanging epiphyte of some sort, with
Bearded Moss or Spanish Moss common choices.  But to build the nest, the
adults bring materials including ".. more of the epiphyte fibers collected
elsewhere by the adults, or sometimes the bowl is lined with hair, fine
grasses, pine needles, or plant down."  Non-epiphytic nests are uncommon,
but can include hanging debris and cording.
